Head-reliquary of pope Alexander.
Mosan workshop, circa 1145, from the abbey of Saint Remaclus in Stavelot
Head : silver embossed, chased and gilded. Base : wood core, champlevé enamel, cast, chased and gilded brass, cabochons and silver beads. Legs in cast and gilded brass (the two back feet are restored).

This reliquary, consisting of a majestic silver head inspired by antiquity, resting on a base in the form of a portable altar, was consecrated by Abbot Wibald on April 13, 1145.
According to this date, the champlevé enamels of the base would be the oldest figurative enamels preserved for the Mosan region. They represent the saints Remaclus, Evence and Theodulus and the personifications of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The practice of these virtues elevates the devotee to the ultimate degree of perfection, represented on the back side as a crowned woman embodying divine Wisdom.
The fixation of the head on the base indicates numerous reworkings.
