This fragment was found in the tomb of the infant Don Felipe at Villalcázar de Sirga (Palencia). This son of King Ferdinand III died in 1274. On the scribal band the word al-yumn, " luck ", is repeated symmetrically in an ornate Kufic script.
Silkworms were probably cultivated on the Iberian Peninsula from the 9th century onwards, on the southern slopes of the Alpujarras. Cities such as Almería and Málaga were famous for their production of sumptuous silk fabrics with decorative bands woven into them.
