Stela of king Den
Description
More images

The stela of King Den of the First Dynasty (c. 2800 BC) is a very simple monument. In a rectangle, in the center of the stone, the falcon god Horus is sitting on a stylised palace facade. The so-called Horus name of the King is mentioned, but its reading is still uncertain. In general, the name is read as Den. However, some Egyptologists prefer Udimu or even Niudi.
This funerary stela was once placed in front of the king's mastaba in the royal cemetery of Abydos, as part of a pair.

Excavation: Amélineau 1896-187
